Chapter 10 - Application of downflow hanging sponge reactor and biochar for water and wastewater treatment

10.1 Introduction

Currently, wastewater or water treatment technologies incorporate membrane filtration, complex process technologies for the advanced operation of biological treatment, and other advanced technologies for that purpose.

This is not surprising in view of the technological developments being made in every walk of life; however, it also increases the overall cost. It is also true that even at high costs if improved performance leads to a safe and clean water environment and brings social benefits, the use of technology should be expanded. However, such technologies are not within the reach of less developed countries, where proper wastewater treatment has not yet been introduced for economic reasons. Therefore, it is important to develop low-cost water treatment and wastewatertreatment technologies that can be introduced even in less developed countries. However, low cost does not mean low capacity. It is necessary to develop cost-reducing technology in consideration of the actual situation of the country of implementation while maintaining sufficient capacity. Furthermore, it is also known that high costs mean using potentially a lot of resources, including energy. Considering making sustainable development, which is a biggest concern of this century, we believe that the introduction of...
