Lab. 1: HARDNESS TESTING WITH METALS
(Date of Experiment: June 16th, 2020)
I. EXPERIMENTAL TARGETS
- Understand the principle of Brinell, Rockwell and Vicker hardness
measurement method.
- Familiar and practice the common hardness equipment.
II. THEORECTICAL SUMARY
A. Characteristics And Methods Of Hardness Measurement:
- Hardness is the ability to resist local plastic deformation, under the
effect of load through the puncture.
- Hardness measurement method has advantages:
From the measured hardness value, the strength of ductile metal can
be deduced.
Simple hardness measurement, short time (from a few seconds to a
few minutes). The test sample is not specially prepared. Do not
destroy samples during testing.
We can measure very large or very small, very thick or very thin
(plating layers, permeate ...)
- Measuring methods:
Puncture method:
+ Brinell hardness measurement method.
+ Rockwell hardness measurement method.
+ Vicker hardness method.
The bounce method.

3 MATERIALS AND HEAT TREATMENT REPORT
B. Brinell Hardness Measurement Method
- The principle of this method is to press a hardened, hardened steel ball
on the surface of the sample, under the effect of the load, on the surface of
the sample, there is a glove-shaped dent.
- Using the nose is a spherical steel ball.
- The surface of the test piece shall be clean, flat and free from defects.
- Only measurements of hardness less than 450HB are allowed to avoid
deformation of the pellet marbles.
C. Rockwell Hardness measurement method
- This method is done by pressing diamond or hard alloys cone, with a
corner at the top of 1200, or a steel ball with a diameter of 1/16 ", 1/8", 1/4 ",
1/2 ”onto material surface.
- The Rockwell method allows measurement of samples with a
hardness higher than 450HB, or thin models, smaller than 1.2mm.
- Rockwell hardness can be measured on specialized machines, or
multimeters.
D. Vicker hardness method.
- The Vicker method is the same in principle as the Brinell method, but
in this test, we use diamond intender instead of steel ball and the applied
loads are much smaller than it in Brinell test.
- Diamond intender shape is needle nose, with an angle between the
two sides is 1360
- Vicker measurement method is usually used to measure the hardness
of thin objects, absorbent layers ...
III. DETAILED EXPERIMENT
- Take HRA measurement 3 times and take the average value 𝐻𝑅𝐴̅̅̅̅̅̅.
- Measure the HRC 3 times and take the average value 𝐻𝑅𝐶̅
...
