Horkheimer: provides descriptive and normative bases for social inquiry aimed at decreasing domination and increasing all freedoms
Critical Theory must be: Explanatory – ie. Explain what’s wrong with society Practical – ie. Identify the actors to change it as well as achievable goals for social transformation
Normative – ie. Provide norms for criticism
Normativity of CT: transforming capitalism into “real democracy” where humans take control by real consensus
Critical theory and globalization:
Instead of looking at how globalization constrains democratic institutions, rather look at how the globalizing process can open up new institutional possibilities
