The book “Vietnamese for Foreigners” is intended mainly to satisfy the need to learn Vietnamese of the English-speaking people as well as of the others. It, at the same time, is also aimed to satisfy the need of young Vietnamese nationals, who have grown up in the USA, Australia and other English – speaking countries to learn their mother tongue.

To start with, the book generalizes terms concerning the pronunciation and writing of the Vietnamese language. In this section, we only attempt to present the most popular features of phonetics such as the sentence intonations; the form, pitches and length of tones; how to pronounce some of the difficult vowels and consonants; structure building of syllables and their spelling; the relation between pronunciation and spelling etc…

Yet, with regard to those features in pronunciation that are similar or do not differ much from each other in the Vietnamese and English languages, we’re just slid over.

The subsequent section is a series of 40 units allocated according to themes of communicating contacts which are very common in the modern Vietnamese society; and the application is also expanded to other necessary languages.

In learning, these items should be used simultaneously. As for those who are learning the language for the purpose of travel and sightseeing, Grammar Drills and those exercises which are connected with grammar might be left out.

In the Notes on Grammar we only provide brief guidance on the grammatical phenomina which are very common in the modern Vietnamese language.

To make it possible for self – taught learners, all these items, wherever necessary, have been translated in to English.

The appearance of the book is the fruit of the authors’ experiences and experiments they have had during a period of teaching Vietnamese for foreigners for nearly 30 years, and with references to the achievements recorded by both Vietnamese and foreign author in the USA, France, Japan, Australia, etc…

We hope that the book will be useful for those who wish to grasp quickly the knowledge and skills of the Vietnamese language so as to use in their dealing activities, also, through the book, they can learn more about the varied manifestations of the modern Vietnamese culture and civilization.
